Through the Seasons

We are often asked what makes each season, from summer through to winter, special at Orpheus Island Lodge. Every season reveals a different story of the island’s beauty and rich marine life, inviting you to slow down and connect with nature.

December to February
SUMMER

Summer is consistently warm with daily temperatures averaging around 29 degrees Celsius. The warmer water temperature allows for extended time exploring life underwater. Sea turtles are present year-round, with female turtles coming out of the water to lay their eggs onshore from November through to January. Orpheus Island Lodge has a seasonal closure from late January to early March each year for routine property maintenance.

March – May
Autumn

Daily temperatures remain balmy with a daytime high of around 27°C and night time lows of around 22°C throughout autumn. The days offer remarkably clear skies, which flow into glorious sunsets. Soak up the pristine surroundings and tranquil atmosphere with sunset cocktails overlooking the Coral Sea.

June – August
Winter

The cooler months are still warm by the standards of most. Temperatures remain in the high 20s and the crystal-clear waters are as inviting as ever. Humpback and Minke whales begin their northern migration, and it’s common for these majestic and curious creatures to approach the tour boat for a closer look.

September – November
Spring

Spring brings another season of idyllic island weather. Sea breezes caress warm days where the average high is around 26-30°C and drops to the low 20s at night. It’s a great time of year to embark on a day trip to nearby Hinchinbrook Island to be rewarded with sightings of the vibrant native birdlife and fora coming into bloom.
