From October to December, the waters surrounding Orpheus Island offer a special opportunity to experience coral-spawning season on the Great Barrier Reef. Spawning typically occurs one to six nights after the full moon, with many corals using lunar conditions to time this natural event. Orpheus offers access to colourful fringing reefs close to the lodge and remote outer reef dive sites by private boat. Coral spawning is the reef’s annual reproductive event. During this mass-synchronised event, many coral colonies release egg and sperm bundles at the same time, helping support the next generation of hard and soft corals across the Great Barrier Reef.
